$3.6 billion
value of the retail packaged food market in 2024

#1
market for retail packaged food sales in the Caribbean

20-25%
of total retail sales in the DR attributed to modern retailers
Euromonitor has reported that the retail sales value in the packaged food market in the Dominican Republic was US$3.6 billion in 2024. The DR is by far the largest market for packaged food sales at retail in the Caribbean. The forecast growth rate is estimated with packaged food sales at over US$5.1 billion by 2029.
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that the retail landscape in the Dominican Republic is characterized by a clear division between modern and traditional channels. The modern retail sector represents about 20% to 25% of total retail sales, while the traditional retail sector accounts for 70% to 80%, highlighting its continued dominance in the market.
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that industry sources indicate that the best product prospects in the Dominican retail sector include U.S. dairy products, poultry, beef and beef products, flour and other baking ingredients, spices, candies, fresh fruit, processed vegetables, prepared foods, condiments and sauces, snacks, eggs and egg products, and fruit and vegetable juices.

20%
of the country’s GDP from the foodservice sector
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that in the DR, the hotel, restaurant, and institutional (HRI) sector has become the country’s primary economic activity, contributing almost 20% of GDP, both directly and indirectly. The DR closed 2023 with a total of 10.3 million visitors.
The rise in economic growth, in large part due to tourism, has spurred consumer spending, particularly in the food and beverage sector. Increased spending has sparked greater demand for premium products.
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that leading U.S. products in the Dominican Republic’s foodservice sector include premium red meat cuts, pork, poultry, seafood, cheeses, frozen potatoes and vegetables, fresh fruit, wine, and craft beer. U.S. beef, particularly specialty cuts, is popular in high-end restaurants, especially in Santo Domingo.
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that the food-processing industry in the DR reached a total of US$4.8 billion in activities classified under the category “food industry” for calendar year (CY) 2023, constituting 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP). While some raw materials are sourced locally, many processed products incorporate imported ingredients with a significant portion originating from the U.S.
FAS Post Santo Domingo reports that the United States has consistently been a major supplier of meat, edible meat offal, and animal and vegetable fats for the Dominican meat processing industry; this trend is expected to continue.
